Austin OCD Therapist for Adults

OCD In Adulthood

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) tends to develop before the age of 35. In the US, the average age of onset of OCD is 19.5 years. Typically, symptom onset is gradual and, if left untreated, the course of the disorder is chronic and remission rates are low. Females have a slightly higher rate of OCD in adulthood than males. Additionally, onset or exacerbation of OCD has been reported in postpartum mothers, as well as symptoms that can interfere with the development of the mother-infant relationship (e.g., violent obsessions leading to avoidance of the infant).
